Great Young Australians

Almost 200 guests were inspired by the stories of Jonty Bush and David Wirrpanda.  This fantastic event featuring the Young Australian of the Year and Western Australia’s Young Australian of the Year was held at Government House Ballroom was attended by representatives of Government, Business, Sport and school children.  Edith Cowan University proudly sponsored the event along with the Department for Communities, Office for Youth. Both Professor Tony Watson of ECU and Hon Donna Faragher MLC, Minister for Youth expressed their delight in being involved in supporting greatness in inspirational young Australians.

                                   

 

Australia Day Ambassador Program

Twelve outstanding Western Australians have accepted the invitation to participate as Australia Day Ambassadors in this Woolworth's sponsored Program.

These inspirational men and women will participate in Australia Day celebrations throughout WA from Kununurra to Esperance and their willingness to support the initiative reflects their commitment to community values.  They’ll be encouraged to take part in everything from presenting Premier’s Active Citizenship Awards to handling a set of tongs at the local BBQ.

The Shires and their visiting Ambassadors are:

  • Albany: Eoin Cameron, ABC Radio presenter
  • Armadale: Barry Cable, AFL Legend
  • Bunbury: Graham Moss, CEO Tourism Council of WA & Brownlow Medalist, Member of AFL & WAFL Hall of Fame
  • Esperance: Allana Slater, Olympic Gymnast
  • Geraldton: Ros Worthington, Social Philanthropist - Breast Cancer Foundation and Make-a-Wish Foundation
  • Joondalup: Patti Chong, Lawyer and Charity Fundraiser
  • Kununurra: Mark Sheen, Mountaineer – first WA person to climb Mt Everest
  • Mandurah: Garth Tander, V8 Supercar Champion
  • Newman: Darren Lomman, Founder Dreamfit Foundation and WA Young Australian of the Year 2007
  • Northam: Priya Cooper, Paralympian
  • Survival Festival (Fremantle): Mark Bin Bakar / Mary G, WA Australian of the Year 2008
  • Victoria Park: Ken McAullay, Member WAFL Hall of Fame and former WA Cricketer - GM Insurance Commission of WA

The aims of the Australia Day Ambassador Program are:

  • To promote the celebration of Australia Day.
  • To give recognition to Australia’s outstanding individuals for their achievements.
  • To provide an opportunity for all Australians, particularly those in country areas, to meet and gain inspiration from Australian achievers from all walks of life.
  • To help provide a link between city and country – promoting understanding and heightening awareness of rural needs and problems.
  • To increase community spirit and involvement of all Australians, regardless of origin and background, in Australia Day activities.

Our Aussie of the Month page highlights a featured school each month. Currently featured is Deanmore Primary School.
