Aussie of the Month Awards

Encouraging Australian Pride and Spirit
in over 400 schools

The Aussie of the Month Award is a West Australian school based award program being presented in over 400 schools across the State.

Like all of our awards the Aussie of the Month award recognises personal endeavour, achievement and contribution to the community. The awards also reflect some of the values we share as Australians, a sense of fair play, generosity of spirit, commitment to community participation and a real concern for the environment.

This year's "Aussie" certificate features David Wirrpanda, WA's Young Australian of the Year for 2009.

Young Australian of the Year, Jonty Bush attended a special Assembly to honour their Aussie of the Month winners.  After an inspiring talk to the young students where Jonty encouraged them all to work hard and become everything they want to be, she presented a special lapel pin to each of the Aussie of the Month recipients for 2009 followed by the presentation of the Aussie of the Month Award to their latest winner.  Representatives from program sponsors RAC and Pilot Pens were also there and the event was featured in the Stirling Times.  The students were very excited to have their photos and achievements publicised

Thank you to Greg Downes, Deputy Principal of Deanmore Primary School for organising this special Aussie of the Month Presentation and hosting a visit by the Young Australian of the Year.

Congratulations Fionn, Sean, Rosie and George and a special mention to Taylor North who was unable to attend - the Australia Day Council of WA is very proud to recognise such great young Aussies.

Many schools have successfully integrated the Aussie of the Month program into their civics and citizenship curriculum, by using the award to generate discussion on community participation and involvement.

Each month a student is chosen as the Aussie of the Month and the recipient is presented with the Aussie of the Month badge and certificate at a school assembly. The certificate and badge is kept by recipients as a memento of the occasion .

Each year new certificates are provided to schools which incorporate a photograph and message from the new Young Australian of the Year. In line with the philosophy of the ‘Aussie’ program we hope the inclusion of the outstanding Young Australian each year serves to inspire students to strive for excellence in all their endeavours.
